We were pleased to be the Haberdashers Hall wedding photographers for Natasha and Sam’s Jewish wedding last month. Natasha and Sam were married in a ceremony at Bevis Marks synagogue in London. Bevis Marks is the oldest synagogue in the UK and it was really good to photograph a wedding there. You can feel the history in the place. One of the many things I appreciate about being a Jewish wedding photographer is the inclusive nature of the events. The rabbis are always happy to have me close under the chuppah. This time seemed particularly emotional and I was certainly drawn into that. Rabbi Morris sang to the couple. I wasn’t expecting it to be as beautiful as it was. Natasha and Sam were fighting back the tears.
Smashing the glass also takes place under the chuppah and is a normal, important part of a Jewish wedding ceremony. This time it was really different though. It was the first time ever that we know of that a bride and a groom both smashed a glass each at the same time during the chuppah. I have attached a shot of this to the gallery for you to see. Natasha is an equal rights campaigner and so this was important for both her and Sam to be able to do and I am pleased I was able to be there to see that (as well as photograph it).
Natasha and Sam hired a yellow New York taxi cab to travel to Haberdashers Hall after the synagogue! We joined them there and, after drinks and canapés, everyone jumped straight into the Israeli dancing. Israeli dancing is one of the reasons that I love being a Jewish wedding photographer so much. I have added a few of the exciting images we took from this craziness to the gallery.
As Haberdashers Hall wedding photographers, we love the blend of old and new that comes together in the building’s architecture. There is a secluded courtyard in the centre and the oak panelled room for the wedding breakfast is a good counterpoint. The bank of windows in this room ensured plenty of natural light for the speeches. Moreover, the venue is located around d the corner from Smithfield Market.
At midnight, after the wedding was over, we wandered through Smithfield Market with Natasha and Sam for some creative portraits. The plan was good because it was also on there route back to the hotel they were to stay at for the evening. I get a lot out of this sort of photography. It allows me to test my skills and play creatively with both the evening’s ambient light as well as with flash setups. The results are often very rewarding and, as in this case, they are the images that I love to edit the most. So, we are not just about Haberdashers Hall wedding photographers, we are Smithfield Market wedding photographers (at night) too!
